Candy Girls

Great! All we need is one more reality television show! As if we don't have enough of drunk, barely clothed girls on Rock of Love, or of blubbering, cheating idiot boyfriend on The Tool Academy. Now E! has presented us with a new show about four African American women who present themselves as beautiful women used to drape over men at music and entertainment parties. They fly on the most expensive jets, demand the nicest clothes and occasionally, or maybe more than occasionally, get into ridiculous catfights. Sound familiar? Well, probably because Candy Girls seems to be exactly like every single other reality show on TV now-a-days. Half-naked, poorly educated, alcohol and men-driven sexy women. How many of these women can we see? When will this fascination end?

  1. As much as I think this is a copout, you can attribute some of the reality craze to the recession. It's the same reason why EVERY movie is doing so well @ the box office right now. Because people want to escape from their lives for a little bit, and mindless entertainment like this provides that service for them. Also, reality shows are literally made for next to nothing compared to the amount it costs to produce scripted shows. There aren't actors' salaries to pay, no writers, very few frills in production, etc. While this looks like utter trash, these girls aren't going away any time soon.

  2. I just think a lot of media companies are trying to ride this reality wave wayyyy too far. Is there any show on TV that's not a "reality show"? Think about it.. basically everything on MTV is now, and its counterparts. Even the food network has jumped on this bandwagon. In this case, there is never a shortage of people who are trying to get famous as easy as possible. All of these reality shows are full of people who can sing, dance, look good, you name it. The pretty much cover all the bases, and most people are just trying to find their 15 minutes. I do not think this is going away anytime soon, unless people just refuse to watch it. Except, it's almost like a car crash -- you don't want to watch, but you can't help yourself.

  3. I agree with Mia. Every channel is filled with reality shows. Bravo, for instance, I feel is just playing reality show after reality show all day long...(i get sucked in easily so i would know). I love Bravo, Top Chef, can you get any better. But sometimes you flip through the channels and there feels like there is nothing on. If it's not reality shows, it's some type of crime drama like law & order or CSI. Also, the third category i would put tv in would be: comedy, like Friends, Everybody loves raymond and Home Improvement. But, these days, producers are streching, and dont get me wrong i love beautiful people who are half naked, who doesnt? but Candy Girls is a big strech.

  4. When I first heard of this show coming on, I thought it was going to be something totally different than what it actually ended up representing. I can't believe (well, yes I can, but I am still kind of shocked) that there is such trash allowed on public television and that it's condoned and support by popular media outlets. It seems like such a shame that women like this serve as role models of "career-driven" women to our youth in America. Too bad they don't make a reality show about female lawyers or businesswomen who started from the ground up and have achieved success in their field.
